Test Structure

The Duolingo English Test assesses four language skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—through an adaptive testing format. The test adjusts in difficulty based on your responses, providing a unique and personalized assessment for each test-taker.

Introduction & Setup:

• Duration: 5 minutes
• Tasks: Verify your ID, take a photo, and complete a few setup steps to ensure the test is taken under proper conditions.

Adaptive Test:

• Duration: 45 minutes
• Tasks: This section includes a variety of tasks, such as: Read and complete sentences, Listen and type the spoken words or phrases, Describe an image in writing, Read aloud sentences, Write a short essay on a given topic, Speak your answer to a question provided.
• The difficulty of the questions will adapt based on your performance. The test covers a broad range of language skills in a concise time frame.

Video Interview & Writing Sample:

• Duration: 10 minutes
• Speaking: Respond verbally to an open-ended question. Your response will be recorded.
• Writing: Write a short response to another open-ended question.
• This section does not contribute to your overall score but is shared with institutions along with your test results to provide a fuller picture of your language abilities.

Scoring

• Score Range: The DET provides a score on a scale of 10-160, with scores reported in increments of 5.
