National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET): Gateway to Medical Education in India

What is NEET?

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a national-level entrance examination in India for students aspiring to study undergraduate medical courses (MBBS/BDS) and some other medical courses like AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS, etc.) in government and private institutions across the country. NEET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

  • Test Structure

    NEET is a pen-and-paper-based test consisting of a single exam with multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The test covers three main subjects:

  • Physics

    • Number of Questions: 50 questions (35 questions in Section A, 15 questions in Section B, with the option to attempt any 10 questions from Section B)
    • Marks: 180 marks
    • Content: Includes topics like Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics, etc.
  • Chemistry

    • Number of Questions: 50 questions (35 questions in Section A, 15 questions in Section B, with the option to attempt any 10 questions from Section B)
    • Marks: 180 marks
    • Content: Covers Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry.
  • Biology (Botany and Zoology)

    • Number of Questions: 100 questions (50 questions each from Botany and Zoology)
    • Marks: 360 marks (180 marks for Botany and 180 marks for Zoology)
    • Content: Topics include Cell Structure, Genetics, Ecology, Plant and Animal Physiology, Human Physiology, etc.
  • Scoring and Marking Scheme

    • Total Marks: 720 marks
    • Each correct answer earns +4 marks.
    • Each incorrect answer incurs a -1 mark deduction.
    • Unanswered questions receive no marks.
    • Rank: The rank is determined based on the score, with higher scores leading to better ranks.
  • Eligibility Criteria

    • Nationality: Indian nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and foreign nationals are eligible.
    • Age Limit: Candidates must be at least 17 years old at the time of admission. The upper age limit is 25 years (relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/OBC-NCL and PwD candidates).
    • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have completed or be appearing in 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects. A minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in PCB (40% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL and 45% for PwD candidates) is required.
