The TOEFL Exam: Your Pathway to Studying Abroad

What is TOEFL?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test that measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. It is commonly required for non-native English speakers seeking admission to English-speaking universities or colleges.

The TOEFL exam is divided into four sections, each assessing different language skills:

  • Reading:

    • Duration: 54-72 minutes
    • Tasks: Read 3-4 academic passages and answer questions related to each passage. This section tests your ability to understand and analyze written texts on academic topics.
  • Listening:

    • Duration: 41-57 minutes
    • Tasks: Listen to conversations, lectures, and discussions, then answer questions. This section evaluates your ability to understand spoken English in academic settings.
  • Speaking:

    • Duration: 17 minutes
    • Tasks: Complete 4 tasks, including expressing an opinion on a familiar topic and responding to questions based on reading and listening passages. This section tests your ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Writing

    • Duration: 50 minutes
    • Tasks: Write 2 essays. The first task involves writing a summary of a reading passage and a listening segment, while the second task requires you to express and support an opinion on a given topic. This section assesses your ability to write clearly and coherently in English.
  • Test Formats

    • TOEFL iBT: The most common format, administered online at authorized test centers.
    • TOEFL Paper-Delivered Test: Offered in locations where the internet-based test is not available. Note that this format does not include the Speaking section.
  • Scoring

    • Total Score: The TOEFL iBT score ranges from 0 to 120, with each section (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) scored from 0 to 30.
    • Score Validity: TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date.
  • Why Take the TOEFL?

The TOEFL is recognized by over 11,000 universities and institutions in more than 150 countries, including the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Achieving a high TOEFL score can enhance your application and demonstrate your English proficiency to admissions committees.
